Aras an Uachtarain brings honey to Clonmel and returns home with prize
Honey Queen Vanessa Drew presented Michael Gleeson from Aras an Uachtarain with the Lub na Coille Cup, the top prize in the novice class at the South Tipperary Beekeepers Association's annual honey show held at the Central Technical Institute, Clonmel.
The South Tipperary Beekeepers Honey Show, which was held recently in the Central Technical Institute, Clonmel is regarded as one of the top honey shows in Ireland and attracts entries from all over the country. This year there were entries from Aras on Uachtarain, who started beekeeping with the help of Clonmelman Denis Ryan, and came away with the top prize in the novice class.
The hard-working committee were happy with the number of entries this year because honey was scarce after the bad summer but judges were impressed with the quality. Entries from new members were well up and this is very encouraging, as beekeeping in Tipperary has a long history and tradition.
The show had a fantastic display of all hive products including heather honey, run honey, comb and frame honey plus beeswax polish, candle-making and cosmetics.
Denis Ryan gave a demonstration on candle-making and Jim Power a demonstration on getting honey ready for sale.
Gerry Ryan was the overall winner, collecting the Bulmers Cup for the most points.
The lady beekeepers did themselves proud with Emma Williams, Aoife Nic Giolla Coda and Irene Power successful in numerous classes.
The chairman, Ann Horan, made a presentation to Norman Walsh for his great support to the South Tipp honey show over the past 17 years as a judge and she thanked him and his wife Rosemary for all their help, as Norman announced his retirement this year.
