Busy Winter Walking Weekend
Last weekend was a busy one for Mid Tipp Hill Walkers. On Saturday, a special long walk organisedin preparation for the upcoming Scottish Winter meet was led by Ollie Walsh. A group of seven took in a number of peaks in the West Galtees wet and slippery conditions. However, it was the wind which made the day most memorable. On summiting Lyragappul, a strong and dangerous gale came from nowhere so that it was impossible to stay upright and everybody had to fall to the ground for safety. After re-grouping, the group descended gingerly, arms linked for support. On the mountains, days like this are reminders of the ever-present challenge on the mountains, and the joy of mountaineering is in meeting the challenge. This was an exciting and authentic winter walking experience.
On Sunday, Ray Creaney led a group of 15 moderate level walkers on the beautiful circuit of Coumshingaun. For many, this was their first experience of this scrambling and walking circuit and it was enjoyed by all. A heavy fall of snow which lasted for 20 minutes at the mid-point added to the excitement of the day, covering the whole coum with a beautiful white veil. One of the party remarked that it was like an Alpine experience! Meanwhile, Bernie O’Dwyer and Martina Kerraneled 17 high level walkers from the Curraheen trailhead into Coumiarthair and on to Crotty’s Lough, again in windy, snowy and very slippery conditions. So, overall, while many people bemoaned the bad weather last weekend, for the Mid Tipp Hill Walkers it provided a wide variety of very enjoyable and interesting challenges on the mountains. One to remember!
Next Sunday, the usual high level walk will leave form Cashel at 11am to be led by Matt Joy.
Meanwhile, 40 member of the group are gearing up for their annual Scottish Winter meet form February 9 to 13 – more about that next week.
