Carrick business group gives derelict site a makeover

The three buildings after the revamp commissioned by Carrick-on-Suir Business Association.

One of Carrick-on-Suir town centre’s most rundown sites is no longer an eyesore thanks to an extensive face lift courtesy of the town’s business association.

The three derelict buildings at the end of Kickham Street whose previous rundown appearance reminded one local councillor of a scene from war torn Berlin at the end of World War 11 have been transformed into fresh, clean, bright buildings in the past
two weeks.

The derelict sites were particularly embarrassing for businesses and residents of Carrick-on-Suir because they are located next to the N24 Waterford to Clonmel Road.

The revamp was commissioned by Carrick-on-Suir Business Association, which used grant aid it received from Carrick-on-Suir Town Council for environmental projects to paint the buildings and properly board up their windows and doorways.

Seamus Campbell of COSBA said the Association decided to take action to spruce up the buildings after reading the Tidy Towns judges report on Carrick-on-Suir, which noted the town’s derelict sites were dragging its performance in the national competition down.

“There has been a fabulous reaction. We put it up on our Facebook page and everybody is delighted. We have received great reviews. Everyone knew it had to be done, it was a matter of taking the bull by the horns,” he told The Nationalist.

Mr Campbell paid tribute to Vincent Whelan of Dynamic Builders and Darren Rockett, who carried out the work on the three buildings.

He pointed out that the redecoration of the buildings is only a temporary job as there is a dereliction order on the three premises but the work needed to be done as it may be years before they are removed from dereliction.

He said COSBA members were proud of the work done
on Kickham Street and appealed to businesses and professional practices that haven’t yet joined the Association to do so and help promote Carrick-on-Suir.
