Clogheen community gather to honour retiring Sr Aine

Warm tributes were paid to Sr Aine on her retirement as matron of St Theresa’s Hospital, Clogheen, when friends, colleagues and family gathered on Friday night last, at St Paul’s Community Centre, to wish her a long, happy and fulfilling retirement.
Presentations were made and Sr Aine was commended on the excellent contribution to the development of St Theresa’s over her 18 years as matron and the dedication she showed to the care of the patients.
Speaking on behalf of the community, local councillor Marie Murphy said: “Shy, quiet, retiring, reserved and introverted are certainly not words that could be used to describe Sr. Aine, however, generous, kind, considerate, understanding and compassionate are all words that would accurately give a picture of her.”
Sr. Aine came to St Theresa’s on March 6, 1976, to work as a nurse. She left in 1978 to become a Public Health Nurse in Dungarvan, where she remained until September 1982 when she came back to Clogheen after Nurse Bridie Quigg retired.
Sr. Rita retired as Matron in April 1994 and in August 1994, Sr Aine was appointed to replace Sr. Rita.
Sr. Aine had great vision and the Friend’s of St. Theresa’s was started in 1994. “According to Sr. Aine, fundraising involved many nights and days of fun, from Supper Socials, to Golf Classics and Church Gate Collections to mention just a few, nobody refused to support this wonderful cause,” Cllr Murphy recalled.
“The short term goal of the Friend’s of St Theresa’s was to improve the actual facilities, that is beds, linen etc and the Day Room, Oratory, Staff Room, Office and Hospice suite were aspirations in the early days, which came to fruition in 1999. It is envisaged that the building will be re-roofed in the next few months. As recently as this week, new TV’s funded by the Friends of St. Theresa’s have been installed.
“Down the years there has been a massive sense of pride from the staff of St. Theresa’s and also local people and today we have a lot to be proud of in the beautiful facility that is our hospital. From Aliceene, Nora Heafey, Sis Ryan, Nora Grey, Dinny Hickey, Sr. Immaculata, Sr. Therese, Sr, Agnes and Sr. Vincent, to the current day staff, all 23 of them, there is still a sense of belonging and protection of the place that is St. Theresa’s. In 1845 it was Holy Ground in famine times and still remains so today and long may this continue.
“Sr. Aine, you have left your indelible mark on St Theresa’s and on the many families you have dealt with throughout your time as nurse and matron. On behalf of St Paul’s community centre, I wish you many wonderful years of retirement filled with laughter, good health and cherished memories still to be created!” Cllr Murphy said.
Presentations were made to Sr Aine, from the community. On behalf of the community centre, Mary McGrath presented her with a laptop computer. Nell Costello and Breda Fogarty presented Sr. Aine with a bouquet of flowers, and Ann Grace gave Sr Aine a gift on behalf of South Tipperary Hospice.
The evening continued with a special cake and then music from the Gordonaires.
Sr Aine, her community Sisters Elsie and Clare, and her family would like to thank the Community Council and all the voluntary helpers for the wonderful night on the occasion of her retirement. “I appreciate all the hard work that was given so freely to make it a night to remember. Thanks to all who attended the night and to the Gordonaires for their feast of music and song.”
