BEL CANTO CHOIR AND LIAM LAWSON
On Friday, May 18, world famous singer and composer Liam Lawton will be performing live in the Church of the Mary Conceived Without Sin, Mitchelstown. Special guests on the night will be The Bel Canto Choir under the baton of Audrey Robinson whose mother is from Skeheenarinky. The concert is in aid of Cork Sick Poor Society. Doors open at 7.30pm followed by the concert at 8pm. TOM KEARNEY
Tom Kearney, great grandson of Skeheenarinky School former principal Michael Kearney, is a terrific friend of Skeheenarinky and was a major sponsor of the 2008 Anniversary Weekend. Tom’s life took an extraordinary twist a couple of years ago when he was almost killed by a bus on London’s Oxford Street. Since that time and during his recovery, Tom has campaigned tirelessly to highlight the fact that Oxford Street is London’s most dangerous road. He is particularly concerned that the usual huge numbers of visitors to London will this year be increased by many millions this year due to the Olympics, and many of those unwary visitors will be exposed to the danger of Oxford Street. GALTY COTTAGE COFFEE MORNING
The date for the coffee morning (10am to 2pm) at Karol and Ed’s house is Saturday, June 16, and not Friday 15th as entered in notes last week. All proceeds are for the benefit of the School Parents’ Association.
ALZHEIMER SOCIETY COFFEE MORNING
A reminder that the fund-raising coffee morning at Billy and Catherine Crotty’s is on this Saturday, May 19, from 11am to 2pm.
GARDEN CLUB AND FLOWER SHOW COMMITTEE
Best Wishes and thanks to all the outgoing and serving officers of the Skeheenarinky Flower and Garden Club Committee for giving the area such a successful and prestigious Flower and Vegetable Show each summer. This show has become the highlight of the year for gardeners, craftspeople, photographers, bakers, etc., from a wide area. The officers for 2012 are as follows: President – Sean Crotty; Chairman – Doug Haskell; Vice Chairman - Declan Duggan; Secretary – Deirdre Walsh; Treasurer – Catherine Walsh. Outgoing are Kathleen Hennessy, Michael Slattery and Susan Walsh all of whom helped to bring the show to its present lofty position in the region’s Flower and Vegetable Show calendar.
CROW’S FOOT CARVING
Many of you will at some time have seen the curious crow’s foot marks carved into stones on walls in your area and many of you will already know exactly what those marks signify. The crow’s foot is a bench mark used by the Ordnance Survey of Ireland cartographers when they were compiling their maps in the 1840s and again in the early 1900s. They depict feet-above-sea -level. The mark at the site of the old Skeheenarinky pump on Castle Road when cross referenced on the Ordnance Survey maps is shown to be exactly 403 feet above sea level.
JOHN SHEEHY
Condolences are offered to the Sheehy family of Ballyporeen on the passing of John Sheehy, husband of Nell and father of J.J. All their friends in Skeheenarinky were saddened by the news of their loss. May John rest in peace.
CLAIRE ENGLISH (CORBETT)
Sincere condolences are offered from all their friends in the Skeheenarinky area to the Corbett family of Clogheen and the English family of Killeigh, Cahir on the loss of Claire, daughter of John and Margaret Corbett and wife of Geoff English.
