TOURANEENA VILLAGE IMPROVEMENT

Even though it had only been newly formed, a tremendous amount of work was carried out by the Village Improvement committee during 2012. The fund raising activities got off to a great start in 2012 with the ‘Little Bob Memorial Tractor Run’, which raised E1,700 for the improvement initiative. There was also a performance by the Kilkenny Youth Orchestra during the summer that raised E800 and a table quiz in the Autumn that raised over E1,200. The committee has also applied for Government funding for the village park and hopefully this will be successful.

Some of the work that was carried out was the planting of 20 trees at Cois Broe and on the school bank/grounds.

The school bank was planted with flowers and the new footpath through the village and the landscaping, perimeter walls at Cois Broe is near completion. Also work on new watermain undergrounding of overhead ESB and telecom wires and the existing public lighting on utility poles, which will be replaced with new public lighting. Resurfacing of the roads in the village has commenced and is due to be completed in early 2013.

Overall a fantastic amount of work has been achieved in a short space of time and we would like to thank all those who contributed to the fund raising events, all the volunteers and also a big thanks to the following committee members: Ray Ryan, Ber Burke, Richie Hickey, Maurice Keane, Darren O’Connor, John Carroll, Deirdre Ryan, Rita Hickey, Kate Tobin, Maurice Cliffe, Anna Thompson, Grainne Hallinan, Nicola Dalton, Mike Murray, Anita Coyne, Pa Hallinan and Triona Ryan.

Once all the current council work is finished, the plans and priorities for 2013 are to establish regular road sweeping, weeding and the cleaning of verges in the village. Maintain the flower beds at the school bank. Erect new public lighting throughout the village. Introduce public seating and litter bins. Erect signs at the village entrances. Plant more trees, flower beds and shrubs. Improve the green space at Cois Broe. Fundraising to enhance the village park/village play ground. The initiatives require funding and there will be fund raising activities held throughout the year and we hope to see such a positive response as we did in 2012. This year’s fundraising activities kicked off with a great turnout for the ‘Little Bob Memorial Tractor Run’ held on New Year’s Day. If you would like to get involved in the Touraneena Village Improvement Initiative, please email any committee member at touraneena@gmail.com

Thank you to the committee for their tremendous work and to anybody that helped in any way to the improvement of the village in 2012.
