Fethard hit by worst flooding in sixty years

The town of Fethard was affected by flooding for the first time in more than 60 years when heavy overnight rain forced the river Clashawley to burst its banks on Monday morning.
The Valley and the Cloneen Road were among the worst-hit areas and a section of the wall opposite the Glanbia store was knocked by the pressure of the water.
Noreen and Bill Maher, who live at Abbeyville, near the old mill, saw their home flooded by several inches of water between 10 and 11am on Monday morning.
“The water came in really fast, there was nothing that could be done about it. It was very bad, I’ve never seen anything like it”, said Mr. Maher, as the mopping-up and cleaning operation continued on Tuesday. He said that the field in front of the house was under several feet of water on Monday.
The Mahers were very grateful to everyone who came to their assistance.
Some houses in Mockler’s Terrace, Burke Street and Abbey Street were also flooded, as was Jimmy O’Shea’s garage.
Glanbia and O’Connell Electrical were inaccessible for a time on Monday when the road was flooded.
The Fethard Medieval Festival site was also covered by water, although this weekend’s festival is expected to ahead; and the floodlighting on the town wall was completely submerged.
Locals said that the last flood in Fethard was in 1947 when part of Tinsley Bridge at Grove collapsed.
