Fianna Fail tribute to one of its most loyal and diligent members, Michael Anglim

It was with deep regret and sadness we learned of the passing of our friend and colleague, Michael Anglim on Wednesday, January 2, 2013 at his home in Ballylaffin, Ardfinnan, surrounded by his wife and family.
Michael joined the Ardfinnan Fianna Fail Cumann when he was just 21 years old and served as Chairman for 40 years. He served on South Tipperary Council since 1991 and was elected 4 times by the people of Ardfinnan and surrounding areas, topping the poll on several occasions. He was bestowed the great honour of being elected Chairman of the Council in 1997 and was given a hero’s welcome by the people of Ardfinnan, the village he loved, when he arrived with his Chain of Office. The celebrations were such that they are still talked about today!
He served on numerous committees over his long span in the Council and was a member of LAMA (Local Authorities Members Association) up to his death. As a councillor, Michael worked hard for all the people, whom he served with great dedication and commitment.
He was never one to broadcast his work, but he had outstanding networking skills and if you needed something done, you knew Michael would do his utmost to get a result and he was the essence of discretion.
The Fianna Fail Party has lost in Michael, a man who had a great heart, was extremely intelligent and witty and was loyal to the Party. He was also a very thoughtful, unassuming man, never putting himself forward but he held very solid views and had great respect for everybody. He was old stock, the salt of the earth and there will never be his likes again. If anyone was the living embodiment of the dictum “its nice to be great but it’s great to be nice” – it was Michael Anglim!
As a mark of respect to Michael and as testimony to the high esteem in which he was held, fellow councillors, TDs and former colleagues held a special meeting of South Tipperary Council, which was attended by his son, Micheal and members of Ardfinnan Cumann Fianna Fail. Many emotional tributes were paid to “a true Irish gentleman of politics” at the meeting, which was held in his home parish of Duhill at the Duhill Community Hall prior to his burial on Friday, January 25, 2013. Tributes were paid to him from across all political parties and the common link in all, was the character that was Michael Anglim. His son, Michael, in a moving tribute, said his father could have been described as “a lovable rogue, who was “Fianna Fail, first, last and always”. He said his father loved the Council and when the Ardfinnan Cumann asked him to go for the Council, he knew when he went before the people, he wouldn’t be beaten. Elected he was and it meant the world to him.
Among the very large attendance of both the removal and burial included Councillors, TDs and Senators, both past and present and included Party Leader Micheal Martin T.D. along with present and past Chairmen of LAMA and many politicians from across all parties. The graveside oration was given by his great friend and colleague, Noel Davern.
To his wife, Bridie, son, Micheal, daughters, Mary, Joan, Rosaleen and Valerie, grandchildren, sons-in-law, extended family, relatives and friends we extend our deepest sympathy in the great loss to you all.
