Free parking days “a resounding success”, say local traders

Clonmel Chamber of Commerce has hailed the decision by Clonmel Borough Council to allow free parking on a number of Saturdays before Christmas as being extremely beneficial to the local economy. The business group said that feedback from retailers and customers was overwhelmingly positive.

“Anyone who was in Clonmel on any of the four Saturdays before Christmas could not have failed to notice the vibrancy and great atmosphere that was prevalent around the town. We believe that the move to allow free car parking in town centre car parks played a significant role in that” said Tina Mulhearne (HR Direct), president of Clonmel Chamber.

Chamber of Commerce director and local retailer, Conor Moroney, also saw the positive impact of the initiative. “Free parking in Clonmel Borough Council car parks on all Saturdays in December was a resounding success for Christmas trading in the town. Many customers commented on this encouraging initiative, saying that they hope to see more of the same and there was a definite increase in spending in Clonmel on those days” he said.

The move to secure free parking days in the town has been part of the Chamber’s agenda for many years and they have successfully secured free parking to coincide with events such as Style Clonmel and the County Colours Day.

“We have seen time and again the benefit of such a move by Clonmel Borough Council and the success of the pre-Christmas initiative demonstrated that by working together that the business community and the local authorities can effect a positive change in the town” commented the Chamber president, Tina Mulhearne.
