A Clonmel bakery has been chosen as one of the Best Shops in Ireland.

Hickey’s, at the West Gate, was selected in the final list of 12 shops throughout the country that were nominated by Irish Times readers in e-mails, letters and online messages.

Another Clonmel shop, Forget Me Not gifts in Parnell Street, was also included in the original long list of 50. Both shops were the only Tipperary stores nominated.

Last Saturday’s Irish Times magazine included a feature on each of the 12 best shops and Hickey’s was described as being “as much a part of the town’s history as the old arch itself. Originally established in the 1900s, the store has been home to no less than four generations of Hickey bakers.

The youngest of these, current owner and local entrepreneur Nuala Hickey, has been in the business for more than 20 years and – judging by the amount of awards the bakery has garnered during her time there – she’s doing a good job.

Traditional soda bread, pastries, full lunches and Hickey’s famous sliced pan – made fresh in-store - are all accompaniments to what (customer) Cate McCarthy believes is the best barm brack in Ireland”.
