Horse Festival is a memorable weekend in Cahir

Last weekend saw the town of Cahir buzzing with activity as more than 60 horses ‘took over’ the town from Friday evening. The ‘festival’ weekend began with a group of riders from the Premier Harriers parading through the square in hunting attire with the pack of hounds. After 7pm 10 carriages departed the castle and made their way via the Swiss cottage through the town on a charity drive - a wonderful spectacle to start this year’s Cahir Horse Festival.

Competition events began bright and early on Saturday morning, when at 8am the first competitors in the national horse driving trials were able to cross the sidearm of the river Suir into the ‘Inch field’ behind Cahir Castle. This would not have been possible only for numerous local volunteers working through the night to raise the ford used. Water levels were at a record high level and required days of additional Trojan work to allow the event to be staged.

With rain only sporadically affecting the ambitious program presented, the weekend proved a huge success. The town remained busy until late Sunday evening - Kedrah castle and Cahir castle staged not just the trials, but also dressage riding, natural horsemanship displays, a donkey derby and the first Le Trec competition in Tipperary.

The highlight on Sunday evening turned out to be the carriage versus (brand new BMW) jeep race which saw runners, riders, a quad and two different carriages compete for E160€ prize money. Conditions in the slightly muddy ground conditions only added to the entertainment for the hundreds of spectators watching.

All in all a big success thanks to a superb community effort! Volunteers and businesses worked together to make this a most memorable weekend for all. And most importantly the weather never got the better of Cahir - Cahir got the better of the weather!
