Joe O’Donoghue honoured as Order of Malta enrols new cadets
The Order of Malta Clonmel unit enrolled new cadets at a ceremony at which paramedic Joe O'Donoghue was honoured as the first winner of the Joseph O'Donoghue Member of The Year Award. The enrolment of the first group of volunteers into Clonmel Order of Malta Cadet’s unit was held at a special function in Clonmel Óg’s clubhouse.
The six volunteers, who began training as cadets earlier this year, represent the first inductees into the youth wing of the Clonmel Order of Malta, which was established last March. The short ceremony, at which the cadets’ families and the Regional Cadet Liaison Officer Bryan Crosby were present, involved a pledge to uphold the principles of the Order of Malta and to assist those in need. At the end of the ceremony each cadet received an individual enrolment certificate.
Mr. Crosby said that each cadet was “embarking on a new and exciting chapter of their lives”.
The event also saw the presentation of certificates to members of the senior unit in a broad range of areas including Emergency First Response, Off-Road Driving and Instructional Methods. The range of qualifications obtained by members highlighted the extensive array of skills that can be acquired through being a member of the Order of Malta. Special mention was made of those who had completed the Youth Leadership course, which allows members of the senior unit to instruct and mentor youths.
The highlight of the event was the presentation of the newly-inaugurated Member of the Year award, which Officer in Charge Lieut. Nora O’Loughlin called “the beginning of a new tradition”. The award will be given to the member of the senior unit who has, over the past year, shown a commitment to the principles and tenants on which the Order was founded.
The Joseph O’Donoghue Member of the Year Award has been named after the award’s first recipient - paramedic Joe O’Donoghue, a long-standing member of the unit and a previous Officer in Charge.
Lieut. O’Loughlin was also priased for her work and dedication over the past four years.
