Lions Club reveals Awareness Week events

A family cycle, arts and essay competitions and health information campaigns are among the events Carrick-on-Suir Lions Club is organising for its first public awareness week about the community work it does.

The Club’s public awareness week takes place between Saturday, September 22 to Friday, September 28.

Mayor of Carrick-on-Suir Cllr Liam Walsh will officially open the week of events at the 7.30pm Vigil Mass in St. Nicholas Church on Saturday, September 22 to which past Lions Club members and spouses and families of deceased members will be invited.

Light refreshments will be provided in the adjacent Nano Nagle Community Resource Centre and cheque presentations will be made to local St. Vincent de Paul conferences and The Strand Theatre Building Fund.

Earlier in the afternoon there will be art and essay competitions for Primary School pupils in the public park.

The theme for the essay competition is ‘Lions in My Community’.

There will be a family cycle on Sunday, September 23 out Cregg Road to Faugheen and back by Wilmor.

It will commence at 2pm from the carpark adjacent to the Swan Recreation Hall. Some refreshments will be available in Faugheen. There will also be a tea dance in the Carraig Hotel that day with Noel, Audie and Sean providing the music and the town’s Senior citizens will be invited. It commences at 6.30pm.

Meanwhile, the Club will host a Diabetes Screening Stand at the National Ploughing Championships in New Ross on Tuesday, September 25.

It will also host an Osteoporosis Day on September 26 with Michelle O’Brien, CEO Osteoporosis Ireland speaking to secondary school students during the day and addressing an open meeting in the Carraig Hotel at 7pm.

Cooking will be the focus on Thursday with demonstrations and lessons in Greenhill Secondary School at 7.30pm. And on Friday, Garda Pat Kelly will speak to secondary school students about road safety.

The public awareness week will close in the Ormond Castle that evening with Phil Prendergast, MEP, launching the Lions Club’s latest project, “Message in a Bottle” at 6.30pm and prizes presented to winners of the competitions run during the week.
