Renowned Cashel journalist dies

The funeral of one of Co. Tipperary’s most well known and respected journalists, John A. Murphy, who has passed away following a brief illness, will take place in his adopted home town of Dungarvan tomorrow evening (Friday) and Saturday morning.

The death of the 71 year-old native of Cashel is deeply mourned by his family, friends and many journalist colleagues throughout the country.

Johnny Murphy, who lived at 26 Western Bay, Dungarvan, was a renowned sportswriter, news reported and columnist with the Irish Examiner and its sister papers the Evening Echo and Waterford News & Star. He retired from the Irish Examiner in 2006 but continued writing about GAA games for that paper and other publications and was a regular contributor to radio programmes on GAA. His final weekly column appeared in this week’s Waterford News & Star.

Rosary for Johnny Murphy will be recited at The Kiely Funeral Home, Dungarvan tonight (Thursday). The removal of remains will take place from this funeral home tomorrow (Friday) at 6pm to St Mary’s Parish Church, Dungarvan.

The Requiem Mass will be on Saturday at 11am and Johnny will be laid to rest afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.
