Scouts prepare to celebrate special anniversary
This year the Clonmel Scouts are celebrating a very special event when they will go to Fethard-on-Sea in Co. Wexford on their 50th annual summer camp.
In 1962 the first annual two-week camp took place in Stradbally, Co. Waterford. On that occasion some 52 Scouts, all boys, under the charge of Scoutmaster, the late Joe Purcell, ably assisted by the late Peter Walsh and senior patrol leaders J.J. Gahan and the late Maurice Dromey, spent two weeks under canvas and sowed the seeds of camping in the Clonmel unit, which has thrived ever since.
The local unit is very proud of its camping skills learned over the years. It is also one of the few, if not the only unit to have camped for two weeks every year since 1962.
On Friday night, 29th June the Scouts are holding a slide show of all the past camps, starting at 7.30 at the Scout Den in Sarsfield Street. All past members who were on any of those camps are invited to come along, meet old friends and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and see how they enjoyed their time in the Scouts.
