Boxing apprentices show their mettle as Lions Club raises funds for local club
Clonmel boxing club in conjunction with Clonmel Lions club held a very successful dinner boxing tournament last Saturday night in the Clonmel Park Hotel. The tournament was in aid of Clonmel Boxing Club with the Clonmel Lions Club helping to co-ordinate the event. 18 volunteer boxers from local companies and businesses participated on the night having trained intensely over the past six weeks. Much credit must be given to these volunteers who stepped into the ring in front of a sold out crowd for their first competitive bout. Before boxing commenced the crowd was introduced to London 2012 olympic silver medallist John Joe Nevin who was guest of honour on the night. Mc Ronan Quirke interviewed John Joe in the ring were he showed off his Olympic silver medal to the crowd.
Michael Murphy representing Suir pharma and Joe Fitzgerald representing sports and social club Abbott got proceedings under way in a very entertaining contest. Both boxers displayed all the skills they had learned in a very close contest. Sarah Naddy, Merck Sharpe and Dome and Martina Salach, Camida were up next and their bout didnt disappiont with both girls giving everything up to the final bell. Seamus Hackett, Rainbow / Hackett school of motoring was in against Bassem Yassan sports and social club Abbott in an evenly matched contest, with both boxers trading punches at a furious pace. Dean Kennedy representing the friends of Dean Kennedy took on Gary Power who represented sports and social club Abbott in an all action contest. Both boys refused to take a backward step in a very competive fight. Martin Shanahan, Leetherm against Paddy Hackett, Bulmers proved to be one of the contests of the night. These two boxers pushed each other to the limit showing all the technique and fitness they had acquired in the gruelling weeks of training. Joe Guiney, Camida faced Daniel Lyne, Merck Sharpe and Dome in a very keenly contested bout that had the crowd on their feet. Both boxers showed flashes of brillance that defied their six weeks training. David Conway, Merck Sharpe and Dome squared up to Gary Scott sports and social club Abbott in a contest that ebbed and flowed with both boxers taking their chance to score which resulted in a highly entertaining fight. Cian Dreeling sports and social Abbott was in against Gary o’ Shea, Medite in a contest that proved to be a tactical affair at the start but turned out to be all action with both boxers finishing strongly. The biggest cheer of the night was reserved for the last of the volunteer contests which saw Cathal Coffey, Kentz take on Kenneth Kiely, Sepam. These two boxers went at it from the opening bell but they settled down to show some lovely boxing skills in a very hard fought contest.
Clonmel boxers Jamie Lonergan, Shauna o’ Keeffe, James Shelly, Stephen Fennessy and Dean Gardiner put their skills on display in the last four contests of the night against boxers from Kilfenora and Portlaoise. Clonmel Boxing Club president Billy Kane presented the medals on the night alongside the Lions Club members. Billy was one of the founding members of the club and all the boxers were honoured to recieve their medals from him. The president of the Munster boxing council Mr. Gerry o’ Mahoney presented the trophy for the best club in Munster to Clonmel boxing club which they won this year.
The event was dedicated to Joe Kennedy of the Clonmel Lions club who was chairman of the joint sub committee for the boxing tournament who suddenly passed away on Thursday evening. Clonmel Lions club president Patricia Matthews spoke beautifully about Joe in a glowing tribute. A minutes round of applause was observed before boxing commenced. The Clonmel boxing club would like to extend its deepest sympaties to Joe’s wife Carmel and family. May he rest in peace.
