Carnival atmosphere for fun cycle
On Saturday, September 22, there was a carnival atmosphere in the Market Yard in Tipperary town as early as 9am, as enthusiastic cyclists geared up to take part in a ‘Fun Cycle’ from Tipperary Town to Tramore.
This year’s annual event was organised again by Ted Loughman and Martin O’Keeffe and the funds raised are going towards the building fund at Tipperary Mid West Community Radio.
Pat Bargery, renowned champion cyclist was there to encourage the cyclists and started the event with great cheers. Amoung many cyclists taking part in the trek, representing Tipp Mid West Radio were Jim Keane, Joan Burke and Tom Harnett.
Station Manager Anne Power followed the cycle with colleagues Larry, Breda and Sports Programme presenter, Lena Ryan. Lena did a great job reporting live en route that made a huge difference on this years cycle.
“Because of Lena’s live reporting, the Tipp Mid West Radio listeners were able to follow where the cyclists were and come out onto the streets to shout their support,” said Jim Keane, presenter of the Arts Show, who was taking part in the cycle. “From Tipperary to Bansha, Bansha to Cahir and Cahir to Clonmel people were on the side of the road shouting, Come on Tipp Mid West Radio! This helped tremendously in the fun aspect of the cycle, which is what it was supposed to be. We stopped on the way for tea and refreshments and it was a social fun experience regardless of the sore legs,” said Jim.
The Red Cross, An Garda Siochána and marshals on motorbikes escorted the cycle and did a marvelous job making everybody feel safe. William Mulcrone, (Crash Repairs) led the cycle and Geraldine Keane was on hand throughout the day to ensure everybody was fed and watered.
Everybody along the route was very friendly and supportive. Bansha was the first village the cycle passed through and Mike Maher and many others were on hand to cheer the cycle on its way. This was repeated in Cahir, Clonmel, and every village town and city along the way until the cyclists finally arrived in Tramore, where they received a great reception and friends from Tramore Community Radio also greeted us.
“A big thank you to everybody who took part and everyone who helped in any way to organise the event,” said Anne Power, Station Manager of Tipp Mid West Radio. “The funds raised are going towards the building fund at Tipperary Mid West Community Radio, your local friendly radio, broadcasting from the heart of your community.”
