Carrick-on-Suir Musical Society reveals cast for “West Side Story” production

The cast for Carrick-on-Suir Musical Society’s landmark 100th production - “West Side Story” - was announced following auditions last Sunday.

The Theatre was a very busy place last Sunday afternoon as the “West Side Story” production team of Liam Butler, Fergal Carroll, Eamon O’Malley, Phyllis Cooney and Patricia Woods sat late into the evening auditioning prospective Marias, Tonys, Sharks and Jets.

After some wonderful auditions, production manager Martin Morrissey announced the line-up as follows:

Fergus Power will play Doc, Padraig Sheehan will be Lt. Schrank, Deckie Robinson will be Officer Krukpe and Seamus Power will play Gladhand.

The Jets: Tony (Michael Raggett), Riff (Matt Williams), Action (Bobby Landers), A-rab (Jamie Power), Baby John (Conor Power), Diesel (Jack Phelan), Big Deal (Jimsy Dooley), Snowboy (Caoláin Deehey-Power). Velma (Sheridan Brady), Graziella (Siobhan Grace), Francsisca (Mimi Lane), Anybodys (Amy Walsh).

The Sharks: Bernardo (Dermot Keyes), Chino (Ray Nolan), Pepe (PJ O’Shea), Indio (Eoin O’Reilly), Maria (Louise Mulcahy), Anita (Sandra Power), Rosalia (Aileen O’Shea), Consuela (Lisa O’Brien).

This is a wonderfully talented group the production team are fortunate to have at their disposal.

There is a broad mix of ages in this group that will supply a great mix of youth with experience. This will be needed to stage what is a magnificent but difficult musical.

It is certainly a challenge for both the production team and cast but one the entire crew is now relishing.

A lot of hard work is already being done but the cast and crew are also having a lot of fun particularly at the tea break when the gang have an opportunity to mix, make new friends and rekindle old friendships.

Meanwhile, members of the Musical Society’s Academy of Performing Arts have been selected to perform on RTE 2 television next Friday at 4pm on a program called Elev8.

They are taking part in a talent competition on that program and they will need votes from the public to progress to the final.

Unfortunately, at the time of writing we don’t know how to vote for the Academy performers as this will only be announced during the show on Friday.

The Musical Society appeals to people in Carrick-on-Suir to watch the Elev8 next Friday and vote for the Academy performers or keep an eye on the Academy’s Facebook page for information.

The Society’s agm will take place on Wednesday, November 28 at 8pm in the Strand Theatre. New members are welcome.

Before that The High Kings make a very welcome return to the Theatre this Saturday, November 24.

Tickets are available at the Theatre box office on (051) 645050 or book online at www.carrickmusicals.com.
