Ballina man Gerry Guthrie is one of the brightest new stars on the Irish music scene. And, although relatively new as a front man, Gerry has already had an established career in the business. After finishing school he landed a job with Sandy Kelly’s Band and this gave him an early appreciation of life on the road.

“It was always country music for me growing up in Ballina town, “Gerry told The Nationalist. “I started playing when I was around nine years old and Joe Sweeney, a music teacher in Ballina, was a great help to me over the years and still is.”

“I toured extensively with Sandy Kelly and it was great to be on the road with George Hamilton IV, who featured on the Patsy Cline shows with Sandy.”

Gerry then played with the Martin Cuffe and Shawn Cuddy bands for a some time before joining Louise Morrissey.

“You could certainly say I am no stranger to the roads of Ireland, “ he added.

For the past three years or so he has taken his own regular one man show around the west of Ireland.

Now, things have certainly moved up a few notches and the Mayo performer is making a strong impact. Bandleader with the famous Big Tom and The Mainliners, Henry McMahon is looking after management and he believes the time is right for a fresh young face to make it big on the national stage.

Gerry Gutherie has already recorded some very popular songs; ‘Shut Up Heart’, ‘The Lucky Horseshoe’, ‘Two Loving Hearts’ and the latest, ‘Mayo Will Always Be Home’, which is proving to be a huge hit on the local radio station network in advance of this weekend’s All Ireland Football Final.

Gerry Gutherie will play the Times Hotel in Tipperary town on Sunday night next, 23rd September.
