History lecture finale with top Irish professor

As the summer draws to a close so does the Cashel Lecture Series. Last week Jean Farrelly brought a captivated audience on a tour of South Tipperary hidden archaeological gems: from buried field systems in Newcastle to painted figures on the walls of Kilcooly, Jean showed the depth of her local knowledge about the monuments we have in our midst. Now for this week’s lecture. When it comes to academic pedigree Professor Gabriel Cooney tops the league tables! At UCD Gabriel was appointed Professor of Celtic Archaeology in 2008. He was Head of the Department in 2001-4, and Head of School (2008-11), and during that time he oversaw significant changes and developments in archaeology and the teaching of the discipline at that university. He is currently the co-director of the Irish Stone Axe Project; chairperson of the Research Committee of the Brú na Bóinne World Heritage Site and an expert member of the ICOMOS International Committee on Archaeological Heritage Management.
He is the co-Principal Investigator of a research programme of the Global Irish Institute in UCD, and is also completing a book about death in prehistoric Ireland. He was elected to membership of the Royal Irish Academy in 2004 and serves on its Archaeological Committee; was appointed to serve on the Heritage Council twice; and has just begun a second term as chair of the Historic Monuments Council, Northern Ireland.
Gabriel is also a member of the Royal Irish Academy Committee for Archaeology; was the founding editor of Archaeology Ireland; served on the editorial board of World Archaeology, and is a series editor of the One World Archaeology monograph series. To cap it all off he is personable, eloquent and engaging!
We are very fortunate that Gabriel has taken time out of his busy schedule to come to Cashel, on August 7, to talk about Irish prehistory, and we look forward to hearing about the very latest discoveries and theories in that field.
Lectures (followed by refreshments) are held upstairs in the Library and begin at 7.15pm sharp. The lecture series is kindly funded by South Tipperary County Council under the current Heritage Plan, and by the Heritage Council. It is also supported by the County Tipperary Historical Society and is facilitated by both the Old Cashel Society and Cashel Library. The organisers greatfully acknowledge the support of Cashel Library and Cashel Heritage and Development Trust for the use of venue and equipment.
