I Draw Slow bring old time style of the Appalachian Mountains to Clonmel
Clonmel World Music has been bringing great quality Americana, Roots, Bluegrass and Folk Bands to Raheen House Hotel, Clonmel since 2010. The gigs are run by local music enthusiasts and volunteers and take place in the intimate function room of the hotel, in a comfortable cafe-style setting.
The next Clonmel World Music gig takes place on Wednesday, 13th June. This time it’s the turn of a lively 5-piece band from Dublin called I Draw Slow.
I Draw Slow is a five-piece Old Time Stringband playing original music in the American folk tradition, but with an Irish influence. All five members have played in old time and bluegrass bands around Ireland, Europe and the US over the last decade. Siblings Dave (guitar) and Louise (vocals) Holden have been writing together for 20 years, starting on Dublin’s touring circuit with a funk band.
An interest in writing new music in the roots tradition inspired the birth of I Draw Slow in 2007. The pair teamed up with Adrian Hart (fiddle), Colin Derham (banjo) and Konrad Liddy (bass) to form I Draw Slow. Altogether they have created a new sound rooted in the old time style of the Appalachian Mountains, while drawing on Irish traditional music and modern Americana. The band has since written and produced two albums and toured extensively in Ireland and Europe. Their first album, Downside, was recorded in a farm kitchen in Wicklow and received critical acclaim in 2008.
I Draw Slow’s latest project, Redhills, was released last year and prominently features the songwriting talents of Dave and Louise Holden. Their artfully crafted melodies support the poetic verse in each song. All but two tracks on the album were written by the pair.
It is well known that Appalachian Old Time Music, and indeed Bluegrass itself, was heavily influenced by early Irish and Scottish immigrants who brought their music and songs with them, and Bluegrass Today magazine states that “What I Draw Slow have created seems like a fully natural evolution”.
The band have just been signed by prominent US Bluegrass label Pinecastle Records, who are releasing Redhills in America on August 7th, which is a huge tribute to the band’s quality. They are appearing at many big festivals this year including Vantastival, Body and Soul and Omagh Bluegrass Festivals in Ireland and the Deerlycke Festival in Belgium. They also played at the Celtic Connections Festival in Glasgow last January and are also touring in Germany, UK and Denmark.
Most of the band served time with Prison Love, who were the first band to appear at Clonmel World Music in May 2010. Doors for the Clonmel World Music gigs will open at 8pm. There will be no support act and the band will start at 9pm sharp.
Tickets are only €15 each and are available in the Premier Music Centre, O’Connell Street, Clonmel on 052-6129811; from Gerry Lawless on 086-3389619 or from Martha Beardmore on 087-9107201.
