Museum and Main Guard to host late night of free culture events
The County Museum in Clonmel will stay open until 11pm on this Friday, 21st September for Culture Night, a late night of free cultural events that begins at 10am. The following events will take place at the museum -
Dig Where You Stand - All Day Exhibition. Dig Where You Stand is a project and exhibition curated by Eilís Lavelle, Sarah Lincoln and Rosie Lynch. The exhibition explores language and text in relation to the telling of the past and geographical location and responds directly to the context of a local museum setting and unfolds through video, sound, installation, artifacts from the County Museum collection, found objects, design and a publication. Artists include Susan Hiller, Uriel Orlow, Bridget O’Gorman and Philippa Sutherland.
The Butlers in Tipperary- Talk and Re-enactment: 5.15pm – 5.45pm - An interactive insight into the lives of some of this powerful family. Tea and chat - 5.45pm – 6.15pm.
Dig Where You Stand – Artist Talk from 6.20pm – 6.40pm. Artist Philippa Sutherland will talk about her work in the exhibition Dig Where you Stand. Working closely with the museum curator, Philippa Sutherland produced a series of interventions into the Museum collection. The interventions uncover new and surprising narratives and present a very personal response to the collection.
Throughout the day at the Museum school parties are invited to meet Claoimh – the historical re-enactors. Schools interested in attending should contact Julia Walsh, Outreach Officer, County Museum on 052-6134564 to book a place. At 5.15pm the Museum will come alive as Claoimh introduce visitors to the realities of life in medieval Tipperary with demonstrations of swords and weaponry used during the 17th century, and will examine the history and the buildings of the Butlers. All are welcome to attend.
Film Screening – The Dead (83 minutes long) from 6.40pm – 8pm. John Huston’s film is delicate and unhurried, detailing a Christmas dinner at the house of two spinster musician sisters and their niece in turn-of-the-century Ireland, attended by friends and family.
The following free event will also take place between 8.30 and 9.30pm on this Friday (21st) at the Main Guard in Clonmel - Ormonde, Power, Privilege and Patronage, a performance from 8.30pm – 9.30pm of 17th Century music for voice, recorder and Baroque guitar from Ireland, England and France with Róisín O’Grady, soprano; Laoise O’Brien, recorder and Eamon Sweeney, Baroque guitar.
The 17th century was a fraught and bloody period of upheaval and chaos in Irish Society. Power and allegiances constantly shifted and proxy wars between Continental powers were played out on Irish soil. The story of James Butler, Duke of Ormonde, typifies these turbulent times in his role as an Irishman, ally of Eoghan Roe O’Neill, opponent of Cromwell, Royalist, Exile and Vice Roy of Ireland. This concert features music that James Butler and his family would have known in Ireland, England and France by composers such as Turlough O’Carolan, Henry Purcell, Jean-Baptiste Lully and Henry Lawes. The performance will be followed by a wine reception.
All events are free but booking is essential for the film screening of The Dead and the concert Ormonde, Power, Privilege and Patronage at the Main Guard as places are limited. To book contact the Museum on 052-6134552.
