Musical Society singer wins roles in New York show
Triona O'Callaghan, who has secured two roles in a new show in New York.
Triona O’Callaghan, who has starred in many Carrick-on-Suir Musical Society shows, has secured two major parts in a show called “Avenue Q “ in New York where she is now living.
Musical Society audiences will remember Triona from shows such as the “Witches of Eastwick” and her great performance as Joanna in “Sweeney Todd”.
This will be the New York Regional Premiere of this show and will be staged from September 21 to 30 at the Westchester Sanbox Theatre.
Triona will be playing the roles of Kate Monster, a kindergarten teaching assistant and Lucy the Slut, a skanky chanteuse, who wows the guys with her seductive cabaret number at the Around the Clock Café.
Both characters are puppets and Triona is looking forward to the challenge of this type of production.
Avenue Q’s director is John Tracey Egan, who just finished playing Joey in Sister Act on Broadway.
The show, in its writing and staging, draws considerable inspiration from Sesame Street, and substantially imitates its format, in that there are only three humans on stage while the remainder are puppets.
But that is where the similarity ends as the characters are young adults, searching for their “purpose” in life, and facing real-world adult problems with uncertain outcomes.
Seamus Power, PRO of Carrick-on-Suir Musical Society said they were delighted for Triona.
“She has worked hard since arriving in New York honing her craft as an actor and this is very well-deserved.”
He encouraged Carrick-on-Suir people planning a trip to New York in the near future to book a ticket for this show.
Back in Carrick-on-Suir, preparations for the Halloween pantomime “The Adventures of Ole King Cole” got under way with an informal information meeting for anybody interested in being part of the show taking place in the Strand Theatre last week.
There was a very large turnout, with plenty of new faces.
Seamus Power said it was gratifying to see former members of the Society’s Academy of Performing Arts, who are now old enough to be in the senior cast, attending the meeting.
There is a very short rehearsal period for the panto, so auditions took place last week and the cast is chosen.
The main roles and the performers playing them are as follows: Robin will be played by Matt Williams; Viola, Nicole Smith; King Cole is Padraig Sheehan; The Dame Anna will be played by Fergus Power and Audie Murphy is cast as Windbag, The Kings Sidekick.
The King’s fiddlers are: James Dowley, Melincollie; Bobby Landers, Diesel; Decky Robinson, Blister.
The King’s wives are: Jenny Hogan, Bessie; Hanna Foley, Essie and Paula O’Dwyer, Tessie.
PJ Slater will play the Demon King; Caroline Dunphy, Fairy Queen; Stephan Carr is Keyola, the wife minder, Dennis Barry, Man in the Moon; Richard Dunphy, Mexican Barman; Tom O’Dwyer, Mexican Singer; David Foley, Captain Kirk, Jack Phelan, Mr Scott; Paddy Bartley, Mr Spock, Rachel Hoban, Dry McCoy and Sophie Nugent as Lt. Uhura.
Mr Power wished the cast and back stage crew the best of luck with the rehearsals.
Meanwhile, the Society’s Academy of Performing Arts got back to work last Thursday. There are still a limited number of places remaining and anybody interested should come along to the theatre this Thursday.
