The Fionn Mac Cumhaill Players production of Brian Friel’s ‘Philadelphia Here I Come’ in Cloneen Hall was just a wonderful piece of drama and great credit to all involved. With a cast of fourteen all of whom gave great performances the audience were taken back to 1960 and a time, not unlike our present climate, when a young man decides to leave a small town. On the eve of his departure he reflects on his childhood and how life could have been if he had done things differently. The character Gar O Donnell was played by Trevor Somers (Gar Public) brilliantly as was his alter ego (Gar Private) with Keith Mac Adhaibh a complete new comer to the stage. Keith was performing in his first play here with the renowned Fionn Mac Cumhaill Players.

Anne Williamson, who directed the play, took on the role of Madge in the last few weeks and then on opening night had to double up as Aunt Lizzy. Anne pulled it off though, as only she can. Eddie Duggan was just superb as S.B. O Donnell, and as always Eddie got it right. Master Boyle played by Colm Mc Grath and Senator Doogan by Pat Williamson were just as they should be, the typical school master and protective Dad. The three boys, Jamsey Carroll, David Kirby and Darragh Corbett had a wonderful contrast between them and the gorgeous Linda Mc Grath in her first play as Kate Doogan was perfection itself.

In supporting roles Joe Hanly and William Lankstead were very funny and Michael Hennessy as Canon Mick O Byrne ‘could say Mass for you! A very enjoyable and different take on this old classic
