Search begins for Dorothy and her children for production of Wizard of Oz

We click our heels in anticipation - there’s no place like home and no musical quite like this one.

From generation to generation, The Wizard of Oz has brought us together – children, grown-ups, families, friends. The dazzling land of Oz, a dream-come-true world of enchanted forests, dancing scarecrows and singing lions, wraps us up in its magic with one great song-filled adventure after another.

The most magical musical adventure of them all will lift the roof of the White Memorial Theatre this November when Clonmel will be filled with the sounds of Over the Rainbow, Follow the Yellow Brick Road, We’re off to see the Wizard and the challenge is now on for St. Mary’s Choral Society to find the star of the show - Dorothy, plus a large number of children to be part of the chorus for this magical musical.

St. Mary’s will be holding auditions towards the end of September, and in conjunction with its media partner The Nationalist children from Clonmel and surrounding area are invited to apply to audition for the show.

The application form for both the Dorothy and children’s auditions is available in this week’s issue and when completed should be posted or dropped into the White Memorial Theatre, strictly no later than Monday, 17th September. Please note that applications will only be accepted on the official application form taken from The Nationalist (no photocopies) but there is allowance made on the form if more than one child in a family is applying. No applications received after the closing date of Monday, 17th September will be accepted. Please also include a recent photograph if possible. Parents will then be notified by e-mail/phone with details of audition dates/times so please ensure that the e-mail address and mobile number are written clearly and details are correct when sending in the completed application form.

For the lead role of Dorothy, girls aged between 14-20 years are invited to audition. They must be mezzo-soprano and not in an exam class this year. Children’s auditions are open to children aged 7-12 years.

St. Mary’s Choral Society’s November Production of The Wizard of Oz will be the first staging of this wonderful musical by the Clonmel society. The production will be directed by Diarmuid Vaughan, who will also design the set. The musical director is Danny Carroll and choreography will be by Gillian Hewitt-Fitzgerald. The children’s rehearsal co-ordinator will once again be society stalwart Margaret O’Sullivan.

Rehearsals for adult members of the society will commence tonight, Wednesday, 5th September in the White Memorial Theatre at 8pm. New members are welcome to come along and join this magical musical adventure. Membership of the society is open to adults and school-leavers over 18 years of age.
