Shoer tipped to be Clonmel mayor at ninth attempt

The long awaited ambition of Cllr. Billy Shoer to become mayor of Clonmel could be realised next Tuesday night in his ninth year seeking the honour.

Cllr. Shoer has suffered the heartbreak of losing out on mayoral election night on eight occasions but it now looks likely that his party, the Workers and Unemployed Action Group, have secured the necessary support to get him over the line at the ninth time of asking.

On one occasion he lost out on the mayoralty after a split vote and his name and that of Cllr. Siobhan Ambrose went into a hat with the Fianna Fail nominee selected on the night.

The WUAG’s have been excluded from the mayoralty for the last nine years because of an agreement that exists between the other parties that make up the twelve member Borough Council.

What is expected to swing the vote on Tuesday night in favour of Cllr. Shoer is a written commitment given to the WUAG by Cllr. Niall Dennehy that he will vote for a WUAG nominee as long as that nominee is Cllr. Shoer.

It is also understood that former WUAG member Cllr. Gabrielle Egan, now an Independent member of the Borough Council after leaving the Labour party over the closure of Kickham Barracks, has signalled her intention to vote for Cllr. Shoer.

Cllr. Shoer, a native of Nenagh, worked in Ronans for a long number of years until its closure. He is married to Mary and the family live in Albert Street.They have a family of six children.

The WUAG party whip on the Borough Council Cllr. Pat English said he was pleased to receive written confirmation from Cllr. Dennehy regarding his intentions to vote for Cllr. Shoer next Tuesday night and confirmed that Cllr. Egan had informed him that she would also vote for Cllr. Shoer.

That would give Cllr. Shoer a total of seven votes which would be enough to secure the post.

It is understood that Cllr. Joe Leahy, Fine Gael, is among those that may be put forward by the other parties and independents on the council
