Munster women still fear tampons tall tales
Munster women today still fear ‘tall tales’ about tampons a recent survey by Tampax® has revealed. Young Munster women today are taking on the business world, excelling in science and breaking records in sport – but they are still afraid of tampons.
The survey from Tampax® shows that old myths about tampons still worry Munster women aged 21-24. In particular, women in this age group expressed fears about inserting tampons, pain, safety issues and uncertainty about which tampon they should use.
Dublin females were revealed to be far more comfortable using tampons, suggesting a need for greater awareness among the rest of Ireland. Connaught women are the least confident with tampon use.
In response to this issue, Tampax® has teamed up with Dr Siobhan Collins, a GP in Morehampton Clinic Dublin who specialises in women’s health, to devise a ‘Get the Facts, Ditch the Fiction’ education campaign. Dr Collins provides the facts to young women so they can make informed choices about tampons and get the comfort, confidence and protection they need during each period.
Other key findings include:
-46% of Munster women believe tampon insertion hurts and 39% believe it is difficult
-Almost half (47%) believe that the use of tampons may impact on their health
-71% of Munster women believed you should not wear tampons for a long time and 63% of Munster women worry about wearing a tampon at night
-Almost half (47%) believe there is a higher risk of leaks with tampons than pads
-67% of Munster women believe the use of tampons is not suitable for very young girls
