Emly bids to add European award to national title

Next week the beautiful village of Emly will play host to 12 international judges who will spend all day Thursday touring the village and learning about the commitment its community has made to making Emly Ireland's Tidiest Town 2009 and a strong contender in the Entente Florale Competition 2010.

Preparations began back in February when the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government chose Emly to represent Ireland in this year's Entente Florale Competition.

This year only one other town in Ireland has also been given this great honour, Carrick on Shannon, Co. Leitrim.

Emly will compete against towns and villages from 12 other European Countries: Austria,Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Slovenia and the United Kingdom.

On July 14, the judges, one from each participating country will arrive in Ireland and make their way to Co. Tipperary. They will judge Emly's entry beginning early on July 15.

Emly's Entente Florale Committee would like to invite as many people from Emly and the surrounding towns and villages to come along and enjoy the events which have been organised for the judging.

The National School is celebrating 100 years serving the community this year and will be open to the public on the day of judging.

A Farmers Market will take place from 11am until 3pm near the community hall. An Art Exhibition will be open in the community hall. The skill of hurling, tennis and Irish dancing will also be on display. The Tidy Towns committee hope that the village will be a hive of activity on day of judging. The judges would like to meet and talk to local people as they travel around.

Talking about the event, Sharon Cunningham, Chairperson, Emly Tidy Towns Committee, says - 'Emly is always such a friendly and welcoming village we must really show this on the day of judging. I believe if we all pull together as a community and do our best we could come out a winner again. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support in the past and for the future.'
