Susan is a supermodel for the day

A clever song parody and a little bit of luck combined to give one shopper at the Showgrounds Shopping Centre in Clonmel a day to remember when she was a model for a day as winner of the centre's recent competition.

Susan Moore, who is a full time student and mother, from Kilmacomma in Clonmel, was the winner of the 'Make me a model' competition which the Showgrounds Centre ran in conjunction with Ireland:AM on TV3.

Last week Susan spent a full day at the shopping centre being pampered, styled and treated like a supermodel! She even picked up some makeup and style advice that helped transform her into a 'catwalk queen' for the day.

Originally from Dublin, Susan (39) moved to Clonmel as she married a man from Fethard. She has two teenage daughters, aged 17 and 13. A full-time student at Tipperary Institute studying Creative Multimedia, which is a four year course, she also works as a Reserve Garda helping out the Clonmel Gardai for a minimum of four hours per week and is a volunteer for the Civil Defence.

Susan was persuaded to enter the 'Make me a model' competitions by her daughters as she has "no time for myself, no dress sense, hair like a bush and can't apply make-up to save my life!"

Her entry was a clever re-write of an 80s pop song that caught the attention of the judges.

Speaking to The Nationalist at the end of a long day of pampering and modelling, Susan admitted she never wins competitions and when she got the call to say she had won she first thought she'd made it through to a final, not that she was the actual winner.

She wasn't at all nervous about the big day until the night before, when she went online to see the photos from a past makeover on TV3, but she said afterwards that she really enjoyed her day.

Susan's day of being a model began last Thursday morning at 10am when she arrived at the Showgrounds to be met by stylist Brendan Scully and a camera crew from TV3, who filmed the whole process.

Working with Brendan, Susan said she did tell him a bit about what she likes to wear, then Brendan picked out the outfits she was to model in later in the day. "I was really happy with all the outfits," Susan said, adding that the accessories that Brendan chose were also lovely.

The whole process made her think that she should be a bit more adventurous when she is shopping, Susan said. In future she is going to try and bring the style lessons of the day with her when she's shopping - accessories, because there are so many options, and don't be afraid to try on something you are not sure about when you see it on the hanger in a shop! "Try it on if you like it, even if you think it won't suit you," she advises. She is also hoping to be a bit more daring with colours now.

Watching Brendan at work, Susan said she thought some of the outfits were a bit young, at first, but when she tried them on they were lovely. "I had a brilliant time trying on things," Susan said, adding that the staff in all the shops she had been in during the day were lovely, and always are when she shops at the Showgrounds.

Makeup and hair were also part of Susan's day. The staff at Hype in the SHowgrounds styled her hair, which she admits is usually frizzy but they created a look with soft curls. Susan said she liked how natural it looked.

Sharing some of the makeup tips she learned on the day, Susan said she was told a trick for applying eyeliner is not to close your eye but to look down into a mirror. She was also shown how to use sponges to blend makeup and use bright colours on her eyes.

She also learned some tips for when you are having your photograph taken - never look at the camera straight on and if you push your tongue to the roof of your mouth it gives you a more slender neckline!

"I look completely different to when I walked in this morning!" she said. Admitting that she is normally a jeans and jumpers person, Susan said that she'll probably still wear them during the day but she'll try to accessorise and be more daring and adventurous when she's going out.

Viewers to TV3 this morning, Thursday, will have seen Susan at various locations in the Showgrounds Centre. Her favourite outfit of the day was a pretty black and white dotted dress that she was seen wearing in Eddie Rocket's Diner.

Early risers will see Susan's day on film on Ireland:AM this morning, Thursday, and a live chat with the lady herself later in the morning.

As part of her prize Susan will also receive shopping vouchers for the shops in the Showgrounds Centre.

The shops that took part in her makeover included: A&E Jewellers – accessories; Hype Hairdressers – hair and make up; Marks & Spencers – clothing, footwear and accessories; Only – clothing and accessories; Pamela Scott – clothing and footwear; Pulse Accessories - accessories; Shooz Supermarket – shoes; Vila – clothing and accessories.

All these stores along with the Showgrounds Pharmacy and Pralibel also donated vouchers to Susan so she can go on a shopping spree at the Showgrounds with her new fashion knowledge!
