Mother of Fine Gael TD described as a ‘fabulous family woman’

Profound sadness was caused by the death last Wednesday in Golden of ninety three year old Mrs. Catherine (Kitty) Hayes, the mother of Fine Gael TD for Tipperary South Tom Hayes.

Profound sadness was caused by the death last Wednesday in Golden of ninety three year old Mrs. Catherine (Kitty) Hayes, the mother of Fine Gael TD for Tipperary South Tom Hayes.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny, cabinet members and Oireachtas members were among the large crowds that attended the obsequies in Golden.

Known all her life as a fabulous family woman and a person that provided wholehearted support to community organisations, Kitty Hayes died at her home last Wednesday at Ballinclough where she lived with her daughter Ailish.

Mrs. Hayes had suffered ill health for the last two years during which time she was cared for at her home by family and a team of carers who the Hayes family were very appreciative of.

Married to Paddy, who died twenty eight years ago, she had a family of ten children - Tom, Ailish, Pat, John, Margaret, Michael, Bridget(Collins), Mary (Horan), Caitriona (O’Brien) and Sheila (Strappe). She is also survived by two sisters, Sr.Maureen (New Inn) and Sr. Albeus (Perth).

In a tribute to his mother, Deputy Hayes told the congregation at the Requiem Mass on Saturday morning at the Church of the Blessed Sacrament that she was a strong woman and was a ‘fabulous famliy woman’. She made her mark in the community by supporting the many organisations that she had an interest in. She had a remarkable trait in that she never saw wrong in anybody and throughout her life she encouraged her own family and young people to attain the highest educational standards.

His mother enjoyed good health and was driving up to her 91st birthday, he said. She loved the piano and music and enjoyed playing cards with friends.

Mrs. Hayes died on Wednesday at Ballinlough where she lived and her remains were reposed at her son’s house across the road at Cahervillahow, Golden.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny paid his respects to the Hayes family on Friday evening and his Aide-de-Camp Mick Treacy attended the Requiem Mass ands burial on Saturday.

Over the two days members of the cabinet and Oireachtas members from all parties paid their respects to the Hayes family.
