St. Mary’s Choral Society’s ‘Magic of Musicals’ features award-winning vocalists

Music lovers are in for a rare treat on Friday, 21st and Saturday, 22nd June when St. Mary’s Choral Society presents a very special concert entitled The Magic of the Musicals in the White Memorial Theatre (on Friday 21st) and The Park Hotel, Dungarvan (on Saturday 22nd).

Music lovers are in for a rare treat on Friday, 21st and Saturday, 22nd June when St. Mary’s Choral Society presents a very special concert entitled The Magic of the Musicals in the White Memorial Theatre (on Friday 21st) and The Park Hotel, Dungarvan (on Saturday 22nd).

Society chairperson George Barry will compere the event and the concert will feature excerpts from musicals such as Les Miserables, Oliver!, Chess, The Wizard of Oz, Jesus Christ Superstar and Jekyll and Hyde, which was the society’s most recent production and which has just been nominated for three national AIMS (Association of Irish Musical Society) Awards.

The cast comprises the society’s award-winning chorus, together with soloists who are among the finest performers ever to grace the Irish musical theatre stage.

Diarmuid Vaughan, fresh from his recent appearance in the title role of Henry Jekyll/Edward Hyde, and who has been nominated this year for the Best Actor Award, will perform among others numbers from Jekyll and Hyde and Jesus Christ Superstar, in which he played the role of Judas and for which he was awarded AIMS Best Actor in 2011.

Derek Ryan, who has sung in all the great musical theatre venues all over the world will perform numbers from Les Miserables and Chess and they will be joined by the society’s current leading lady Andrea Ruth-Houlihan who will reprise the role of Emma Carew, which she played in Jekyll and Hyde last month; Ian Purcell, who will reprise the title role of Jesus from Jesus Christ Superstar; and Aine Hennessy, who played the lead roles of Florence in Chess last year and Mary Magdelene in Jesus Christ Superstar in 2011.

The concert will also feature soloists Ruth Butler, Gillian Byrne, Ciara Laste, Holly Jean Williamson, Sheena Fennessy, Michelle Smith, Diarmuid Bolger, Emmet Donlan, Kevin Fahey, David Hughes, Keith Greene, Patrick Morrissey, Timmy O’Dwyer and Liam Hunter among others, who will be joined by the society’s fine chorus who have won numerous AIMS Best Chorus Awards over the years.
