Sonny Condell is in concert at Crocanoir, Mullinahone on Wednesday, April 25.
An integral part of the Irish music scene since the early ‘70s, a musical career spanning 35 years, from the heady days with “Tír Na nÓg” which landed him on the biggest stages in the world, to the truly fantastic “Scullion”, numerous solo albums, perhaps one of Ireland’s greatest songwriters, Sonny Condell is the real McCoy.
Sonny Condell’s songs are melodic and thoughtful, often with a breeze of jazz or a rhythmic hint of traditional music. “Down In The City”, “Teeside”, the poptastic “Carol”, stunning lyrics, distinctive driving rhythm guitar. A prolific songwriter with 15 albums to his credit.
“Three decades equals a remarkable repertoire in Scullion’s world, most of it drawn from the creative genius of Condell, whose subtle lyricism and matchless melody lines bear scant kinship to anyone else on the planet” Siobhán Long -- Irish Times June 2008
Sonny Condell came from somewhere remote up in the Wicklow Hills so he should feel at home in the shadow of Sliabh Na Mban. The nearest he came to musical adventure growing up was listening to Radio Luxembourg under the bed clothes. The Crocanoir musical journey had somewhat similar inauspicious beginnings.
Scullion came about by a chance meeting in the late seventies, of its two main founders, Philip King and Sonny Condell. Sonny was finding his new musical path after the break up of his band Tir na nOg, and Philip was looking for a way to express creatively a deep love for folk and roots music, in which he was and is still passionate. With co-members Greg Boland on guitar, and Jimmy O’Brien Moran on pipes, the band started rehearsing in a small apartment above a chip shop in Dun Laoghaire.
This will be Sonny’s first appearance at Crocanoir and already old fans are coming out of the woodwork to avail of this rare opportunity to hear a real legend of Irish music.
It marks the second anniversary of the concerts at the end of the boreen.
Musicians and music lovers thrive on the intimate atmosphere and enjoy the post concert mingling and sessions almost as much as the concerts themselves.
