Tipp Chamber pushes for commercial rates freeze for 2012

Last week TIRD/Chamber of Commerce hosted a series of breakfast briefings where local business people and organisations were briefed about the many projects the Chamber are involved in.

Town Manager Clare Curley, Chairman of South Tipperary County Council Cllr. John Crosse and Phil Shanahan of South Tipperary Development Company all addressed the attendees, outlining the progress of the various projects and the fruitful relationship between the Chamber and the various bodies and aspirations for the future.

Phil Shanahan’s address was particularly relevant in these difficult times as she outlined the various incentive schemes for employers in particular such as the Revenue Job Assist Scheme. Later in the week, Chairman of Tipperary Chamber, Shane Kelly attended a meeting at the new civic offices with the Town Council with Eamon Ryan and William Kinane of Tipperary Development Initiative. Shane Kelly requested a freeze on commercial rates for 2013 and Eamon Ryan and Willie Kinane made various suggestions regarding parking in the town centre such as improved signage. They kindly offered to underwrite the costs of new signage on the main street and this offer was welcomed by Mr. Kelly and by Mayor Ruaidhri Devitt.

The ‘Tipperary Tenner’ promotion has proven to be a big hit with traders and the public and the Chamber are hoping to expand it further next year. Once again we urge people to support local business, as the retail sector is the main driving force now in the local economy.
