A small Clonmel company received a huge boost and free radio advertising when it benefited from a competition between two national radio presenters.

Ray Darcy and Jenny Kelly, on Today FM, held an on-air competition to see who could make the best radio ad - and they chose James Walsh Motor Factors in Clonmel to be the business they would promote.

The adventure began for James, who is from Clonmel, when he e-mailed the show after they invited companies to send in their details. The show’s producer, Will Hannifin, then called James back to find out some more about the company, asking about the products that are on sale in his two stores, James Walsh Motor Factors in Clonmel and in Kilkenny.

Will found the range of products very interesting and so the business was chosen for the challenge.

James chatted with Ray and Jenny live on air and got to tell them all about his business before they set about creating the radio ads.

The big day came last week, when James, along with his wife Ruth and their three daughters - Erin, Lauren and Robyn - went up to Dublin to the Today FM studios. James was in-studio and live on air to hear the adverts Jenny and Ray had recorded, and he had to choose a winner, which turned out to be Jenny’s ad.

As a reward the national station played the 30 second ad three times on air the next day, totally free for James.

James told The Nationalist that he has had a great response in both of his shops. Not only that but it was a great experience for his whole family. They met the whole team on the Ray Darcy show and all three girls took home a bobble head Ray - which fans of the show will know is a rare prize indeed!
