The County Museum in Mick Delahunty Square, Clonmel will be a hive of activity throughout the day and late into the evening with several free events on Friday, 23rd September when South Tipperary celebrates Culture Night for the first time. The Night will also be celebrated in various other venues around the county.
In the early evening (6.30pm) The Bugle Babes will be performing fantastic tunes combined with slick singing, tight harmonies, seamed stockings and retro hairstyles, making it a concert to remember. Their songs include Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, Glenn Miller’s Chatanooga Choo-Choo and the dreamy Moonlight Serenade, as well as modern songs given the vintage treatment – Crazy in Love, I Will Survive, Mr. Sandman, Could It Be Magic and songs from Beyonce, The Bangles, Blondie and Take That.
The Museum will be launching a book entitled Maurice Davin, A Man and his Boat at 7.30pm, and this will be followed at 8.45 pm by a flavour of traditional music with Nora Butler, Eileen O’Brien and Jennifer Minogue.
Nora Butler is one of Ireland’s leading traditional singers and recently released her second solo album ‘My Home Lies in Tipperary’. Eileen O’Brien is a highly respected musician and composer. She is an All-Ireland champion and currently works as a tutor in the ‘Irish World Academy of Music and Dance’ at the University of Limerick. She has two solo albums to her credit, ‘Newtown Bridge’ and ‘The Fiddler’s Choice’. Jenifer Minogue is a graduate of the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance at the University of Limerick. She has featured on numerous Irish music programmes including ‘Geantraí’ and ‘Céilí House’.
If you still have some energy left why not try a bit of tango from 10-11pm with tango dancer Jazmin Chiodi from Argentina. Jazmin has been dancing and teaching tango for many years. Her practice took roots in the milongas of her (and tango’s) hometown Buenos Aires. So come along to watch or even join in. No experience is necessary, just an adventurous spirit! All events are free.
Culture Night is an initiative co-ordinated by Temple Bar Cultural Trust and supported by the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, in partnership with South Tipperary County Council Arts Service and County Museum.
