A new basketball club for ladies is being set up in the area so that Clonmel can be represented in a competitive south east league.

Behind the plan is Polish woman Patrycja Owczarczak, who has played the sport in her own country at national league level, and local coach Liam Fennell.

Patrycja, who has her own beauty therapy business in Emmett Street, said the club would be open to women over 18 who were interested in playing basketball and representing Clonmel by playing the sport competitively.

“There will also be a social element to it and we want it to be fun as well. We want to encourage women interested in playing to join up,” she said.

Patrycja believes that the talent is already there and she said that the facilities definitely were there.

They plan to use the fantastic basketball facilities available at Monroe for the new club and they hope to enter the team in the south east league.

“Basketball is so popular in Ireland and in this area. We hope to be up and running in two weeks,” said Patrycja.

Liam Fennell said that a pool of basketball talent of young women was already there. A lot of them were involved in the New Inn /Rosegreen club but were from the Clonmel area.

“We want to appeal to some of those players and also to new players and to organise them into competing as a Clonmel team,” he said.
