Santa arrived in style in Tipperary town on Friday evening to turn on the Christmas lights. Leading the way were an array of vintage vehicles from the Tipperary Vintage Rally who brought Santa along on a wonderful sleigh. Many people turned out to see this wonderful display and Santa’s elves were busy handing out treats to the children and collecting Christmas letters for Santa.
Radio presenter Breda Ryan and the crew from Tipperary mid-west radio added to the atmosphere, broadcasting live to the people at home from the main stage whilst Don Andrews kept spirits high by providing seasonal music.
Mayor Devitt addressed the happy gathering and asked all the children to be good for a few more weeks.
Mr. Tom Moher and Mr. Pierce Gordon represented the main sponsors of the event, the Tipperary Co-op. “The Tipperary Co-op is proud to be the main sponsors this year and hope that their many customers and friends enjoy the day and the holiday season.”
Just before the big switch on Santa launched the Tipperary Co-op sponsored, ‘Tipp Tenner Promotion’ by handing out €300 worth of vouchers. The Tipperary Excel lotto draw also took place.
The Pride of Tipperary, Miss Aoife O’Meara and Miss Sunday World, Esme Mansergh Wallace joined Santa for proceedings. The Tipperary Regional Youth Service decorated the main stage that looked magnificent and was appreciated by the crowds.
And then the clock struck 5pm, the countdown began and Santa exclaimed, “Ho Ho Ho”, whilst turning on a very impressive lights display to big cheers.
“The TIRD/Chamber of Commerce has really pulled out all the stops to start the crucial Christmas trading period with a bang this year,” said Tim Ryan PRO. “The TIRD/Chamber of Commerce wishes to thank the Tipperary Vintage Rally for their considerable input to this years festivities and hope that it will become an annual theme to the festivities. We also extend a big thank you to Tipperary mid-west radio for their support on this and many other events in Tipperary.”
Chairman of TIRD/Chamber of Commerce Shane Kelly “ I’m looking forward to another successful Christmas promotional campaign, building on from last year. I hope all our patrons and customers enjoy the festivities that are made possible only by the support of local businesses and the huge effort put in by the voluntary organisations and officers of the Chamber. Our town punches well above its weight with regard to this display and TIRD/Chamber of Commerce acknowledge the support of Tipperary Town Council throughout the festive season particularly with regard to the FREE PARKING initiative leading up to Christmas,” said Mr. Kelly.
