Take a step back in time with the transition year students of St. Anne’s Secondary School and the Abbey CBS, who will be performing the hit musical, ‘Back to the Eighties’ at the Tipperary Excel at the end of November.
The transition year students are working hard in daily rehearsals with Director Michael O’Donohue and Musical Director Pat Murnane to produce the best production of ‘’Back to the 80s’ to date.
The cast are busy getting into character, mastering their accents, memorising their lines and learning some of the most popular songs of the 80s.
Those include ‘Footloose’ and ‘Video Killed the Radio Star’ and throw in a Star Wars dance sequence, luminous leggings, an extensive amount of hairspray and the result is a musical that is sure to get everyone dancing and a show that everyone in the family will enjoy.
Back to the 80s’ musical tells the story of the 1989 graduating class of William Ocean High as seen through the eyes of the narrator, Corey Palmer Sr. who is now living in the year 2001.
The then 17-year-old Corey is madly in love with his next-door neighbor, Tiffany Houston, one of the coolest girls in the school.
However, she barely notices this, as she is too busy mooning over Michael Feldman, the hottest guy around. Michael and his friends are athletic and good-looking kind of guys that Corey and his two best friends dream of being.
However, while they may not be the coolest guys in school, they are still one-up on Feargal McFerrin III, whose best friend is his computer and who believes the crazy notion that one day CDs will replace cassette tapes.
The musical was written by Neil Gooding with the original musical adaption made by Scott Copeman.
It was originally staged by Neil Gooding Productions Pty Ltd in Sydney, Australia in 2004 and has become a popular show for school productions.
“The students are really working hard and each year the bar is raised with their upcoming talent,” said Musical Director Pat Murnane. “Back to the 80s is a feel-good musical sure to get everyone on their feet.” Caolán Hennessey plays Corey, Hannah Dowdall steps into the role of Tiffany and Patrick Crehan plays Michael Feldman.
