Sean Tobin wins historic All-Ireland junior cross country title

Sean Tobin put in a brilliant performance last Sunday in the Charleville Estate Tullamore when winning the All Ireland Junior Men’s Cross Country title very convincingly. This was a historic 1st for the Club as he becomes the first athlete in the Club’s history to win this title. The Junior Men’s 6k was over 3 laps of a good cross country course that had hills, level stretches, twists and turns. This didn’t deter Sean who went about his business from the start and was soon sharing the lead. He kept pushing the pace for most of the first 2 laps and then was relegated to 2nd place going out on the final lap but not for long and on the uphill stretch he put his authority on the race and moved well clear to come home a very worthy Champion in 19 mins 31 secs. This was a brilliant performance by Sean who showed that he has fully recovered from a virus he got at Christmas. Tullamore is a very good course for Sean as in 2010 he won the All Ireland under 17 Cross Country title in January 2011. Then we had Michael Carey also producing a very good performance, probably his best at All Ireland level when coming home 6th in 20 mins 12 secs. This was brilliant running as going out on the final lap Michael was tailed off in12th place but he picked up the pace and was full of running especially over the final 600m as he passed a number of athletes to finish a very creditable 6th place, brilliant performance. Then we had very good performances from both Evan Egan (27th) and Aidan Cremin (37th). These four athletes went very close, agonising close to winning the Bronze medals, beaten by one point.

In the Senior Men’s 12k race we had two athletes competing, Kevin Maunsell and Niall McCormack. Kevin went with the early pace and was soon part of a four man group that dictated the pace for the 1st 3 laps. Going out on the 4th lap Kevin went through a sticky patch for a while and lost touch with the leaders. Midway through the lap he got going again and was running well in 5th place, then in a hectic battle over the final 600m he was edged out close to the line to finish a very creditable 6th on his debut in these All Ireland Championships. This was another fabulous performance by Kevin whose performances whether they be indoor or outdoor have been eye catching. Kevin has shown fantastic progress in the last seventeen months. In October 2012 Kevin ran his first Cross Country race at the Turnpike when he finished 2nd in the County Intermediate Cross Country Championships having played Soccer for most of his life up to then. He took to Cross Country in earnest, training hard and learning from every outing, finishing 3rd in the County Senior that year. Then in 2012 he has shown very impressive progress when winning the County Senior Cross Country title. In January this year he won the Munster Senior Cross Country Silver medal and early this month he travelled to Derry and won the All Ireland Intermediate Silver medal convincingly and he crowned it all off with this performance in Tullamore last Sunday, brilliant running. Niall McCormack also ran very well last Sunday in the Senior Men’s 12k event when finishing a very creditable 36th in what was a very competitive race. Hopefully next year we will target these Championships with a strong Club team.

County Intermediate Road

These Championships, Ladies 4k and Men’s8k takes place in Two Mile Borris at 12 noon next Sunday. It was brilliant to see so many Club members representing the Club at the recent County Novice road Championships where all our athletes performed very well. Hopefully we will get as many members again to travel to Two Mile Borris for Sunday’s races.

Great finish to the 4K Road Race Series

The Club held the 7th race of this year’s series in aid of Acute Stroke Services in the South Tipperary General Hospital which attracted a brilliant entry on  a good night for running and walking. Congrats to all the participants who helped to raise much needed funds for this vital service. The race help raise 800 Euros for this worthy cause.  The race was won by Joe Whelan in 14 mins 14 secs with Fintan Rice 2nd in 14 mins 21 secs and 3rd Eoin McGrath 14 mins 27 secs. Marie Fitzgibbon was the 1st women in 16:58 with Donna Nagle 2nd (17:38) and Sheena Mullins 3rd (18:52). This year’s series was another great success and the Club would like to thank the Brothers of Charity for the use of their facilities at Silversprings for the series. The Club would also like to thank the Civil Defence for all their help as well as the many Club members who ensured that each race was well marshaled and organised.
