There was great celebration of different cultures from around the world in Our Lady of Mercy Primary School, on May 1, “International Day”.
As soon as you entered the school you could sense the excitement and involvement of the children in something very important and different. The school hall was the centre of colour, displays and activities and each class had a stall representing a different country of the world. The school hall was decorated with photos, projects and flags and many of the children were dressed in national costume.
There was also food tasting and the children were given the opportunity to sample the different cuisine from around the world. Supervalu of Cahir had kindly sponsored food made by their own staff. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Dolans of Supervalu Cahir for getting involved once again in helping to make our International Day so special. Parents of the school also contributed food from their homeland. The Parents Council had organised parents to bake through the night and they produced wonderful International Day cup cakes and American cookies. We greatly appreciated the input of the parents of our school in this event.
On the day the children entered the hall with their own “passports” and then visited each country to see their displays. They asked questions of the “Tour Reps” and got their passports stamped. They could then visit the computer room which had been turned into a travel shop and went outside to join in a flag hunt and outdoor activities.
Many parents visited the exhibition and this special day was enjoyed by all the students. It was a wonderful opportunity for us to share a little of our own culture and to learn and enjoy all aspects of many other cultures.
It was a fun-filled day, enjoyed by all!
