An athlete, living in Cahir for the last five years, Sergiu Ciobanu is to compete in the world championship Moscow marathon this August.
The 29 year old Moldovan national has won prestigious cross country and marathon events in Ireland over the last number of years and has set his sights on competing in Moscow.
He recently won the Ballycotton 10k making it three in a row in that event. Sergiu also won the Irish National Cross Country Championship in Tullamore recently.
At present he is a full-time athlete and since January 2011 when he had decided to take this route in trying to obtain Olympic A standard for the London Olympic marathon. He missed out on qualification by 1 second per mile, running a time of 2:15:25 in the Rotterdam Marathon. He is a member of Clonliffe Harriers, as he was living in Dublin when he first moved to Ireland, and has remained a member of the Harriers even though he moved here to Cahir when he secured work here.
Sergiu was also part of the winning Clonliffe Harriers team, at the Cross Country in Tullamore. He was crowned Clonliffe Harrier of the Year 2012.
His current goal is to compete and obtain a top 10 finish in the Marathon in Moscow 2013, for which he has qualified. He is also looking into obtaining Irish citzenship and he is motivated and dedicated to realise his dream.
“I have been training with Jerry Kiernan for the last month and I am training very hard for the event,” said Sergiu who can be seen running around Cahir, in the woods, and in Clonmel in preparation for the event. He is currently unemployed which allows him more time to train. When he originally came to Ireland he worked in Dublin and when he moved to Cahir five years ago he worked in a local meat factory.
In his native Moldova he trained as a kinesiotherapist and physical education.
Sergiu lives in Auburn House, Cahir.
He has competed at European level before with Clonliffe Harriers but this will be the first time for him to compete at world championship level.
“It is a very important event for me and a dream to compete in a world championship marathon. It will be all about the experience for me because the competition will be of such a high standard,” said Sergiu.
