It was no surprise that Carrick Musical Society’s production of Evita was sold out throughout its eight night run at the Strand Theatre last week.
This Tony Award winning show is a big favourite with the public so it was sure to be a good crowd puller. But Carrick Musical Society pulled out all the stops to give audiences a top class production.
Irene Malone gave a commanding leading lady performance as Eva, particularly in the second act. Ray Nolan was excellent in the demanding role of the narrator Che while Dermot Keyes as Juan Peron and Matthew William as Magaldi showcased singing voices good enough for any professional production.
But the stand out performance of the show for this reviewer was the performance of “Another Suitcase in Another Hall” by Mimi Lane, who played the role of Peron’s mistress. Lane’s beautiful, clear voice shone through in this solo number.
Another highlight was the moving performance of “Santa Evita” by the children of the Musical Society’s Academy of Performing Arts. Their singing sent shivers down this reviewer’s spine. The Society’s future is safe with such young talent among its ranks
