The traditional Christmas Festive Concert by the Tipperary Millennium Orchestra in Clonmel has become synonymous with the season of Advent and again this year the Orchestra has prepared an exceptional programme to delight audiences of all ages.

The fifteenth consecutive Christmas concert takes place at Ss Peter and Paul’s Church on Sunday night, December 7.

The orchestra is a voluntary organisation dedicated to the promotion of classical and light opera music to a wide audience. In doing so they provide a platform for young musicians to showcase their talents in an orchestral environment. This gives the members an opportunity to grow and mature as musicians thanks to a very structured programme of rehearsals, workshops and performances.

The orchestra is privileged to have the outstanding talents of conductor/tutor, Fergal Carroll. Fergal has been associated with the orchestra from the very beginning back in 2000 and his current role as music instructor/conductor with the Army Band is testimony to his expertise and ability.

Under the guidance of the many tutors and joint musical and artistic directors Mary Rose McNally and Danny Carroll and conductor Peter Taylor, the orchestra has grown and developed into one of the finest youth orchestras in the country. Even though it is made up primarily of young musicians the orchestra is constantly seeking new members and age is no barrier. Over the last 15 years the orchestra has been entertaining and enthralling audiences all over the county with a repertoire of favourites from all the popular musicals and shows. They also performed to great acclaim at the Irish Association of Youth Orchestras (IAYO) festival in the National Concert Hall in Dublin earlier this year.

They have grown musically and in a wonderful atmosphere of friendship and fun, which were the original aims when the orchestra was formed in 2000 to celebrate the Millennium. This year new members have joined, bringing the total numbers to over 65 who hail from all parts of County Tipperary and beyond and some of the original members are still in the ranks.

The outstanding choral singing and talents of the Gaudeamus Choir will be back for the concert by popular demand. Made up of members of the choral societies from Tipperary, Thurles and Clonmel, this choir has proven to be a huge success since their formation just over four years ago. Accompanying them will be Tipperary’s own Derek Ryan. Derek has been the featured solo artist with the orchestra for many years and his popularity with Clonmel audiences, and much further afield, has ensured that this year’s concert will be one not to be missed.
