The 49th Pride of Tipperary Festival was launched last Thursday at the Tipperary Racecourse as the search for the 2013 Pride began.
It was a very special event with the gathering of past Pride of Tipperary winners and participants being invited to join in the festivities. Laura Moore, Chairperson of the Pride of Tipperary committee said “Tonight’s launch was a wonderful occasion, we are delighted to welcome such a great crowd. The local support for the Pride of Tipperary Festival is unrivalled and it is a credit to the legacy of the event and the many people involved. We wish all this year’s contestants the very best of luck and hope that they enjoy the experience.”
Laura also thanked the sponsors including the Tipperary Racecourse, Ballykisteen Hotel and Golf Resort, Aherlow House Hotel and the Tipperary Festival and their sponsors Tipperary Co Op for their continued support as main sponsors of this years event.
The Pride of Tipperary is now in its 49th year and is the second longest running event of its kind after the Rose of Tralee festival. This pride of Tipperary festival has been part of the social fabric of Tipperary Town and district since 1964. The development of the Pride event is of huge importance locally and it also provides a fundraising opportunity for local charitable organisations.
For the second year running the Tipperary Lions Club are this years beneficiaries. Mr. David Quirke from the Tipperary Lions Club thanked the festival committee in his speech and wished everyone the best of luck.
During the racing the crowd were introduced to the 2013 Pride of Tipperary contestants and their sponsors. MC Jim Keane interviewed each of the contestants on the stage in the High Chaparral room during a well-attended reception. This year’s Pride contestants are: Ciara Cunningham (Fair of Cahir). Anne McGrath (McGrath Oil), Katie Aherne (Baker’s Nightclub), Lena Ryan (Hide Out Bar), Niamh Blackburn (Bit and Bridle), Donna Breen (Willie O’ Brien Photography), Lorraine Spillane (Tipp Mid West Radio), Karolina Kerutyte (Kissane’s Pharmacy), Cliona Sharpe (Clarke’s Tyres & Tool Hire), Amy O’ Connor (Carry Out Off Licence), Stephanie Long (Beechgrove Garden Centre) and Ellie Bailey (Springhouse B&B)
The Pride of Tipperary festival will run until July 13 and includes fundraising events such as a table quiz, fashion show, gala dinner and the Tipperary Festival finale. The launch celebrations coincided with a competitive 7 race card .
