All star line-up for church renovation fund concert

Ss Peter and Paul’s Church in Clonmel will host The Irish Ring, a concert performance of the Irish Ballad Operas – Maritana, The Bohemian Girl and The Lily of Killarney - on Friday, 7th September. The concert, presented by Gaudeamus Productions, is being held in aid of Ss Peter and Paul’s Renovation Fund.

Tipperary’s Emma Walsh, the former leading lady with St. Mary’s Choral Society and a recent graduate of The Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, returns home to sing the roles of Arline, Maritana and Eily O’Connor. Emma, who is currently studying singing with Professor Susan J Waters in London, began her vocal training with Olive Cowpar in Limerick. During this time she received numerous awards and bursaries throughout the country including The Capuchin Order Perpetual Trophy and Bursary at Feis Maitiu, Cork and Voice of the Feis at Feile Luimni, Limerick.

Her roles included Elsie Maynard in The Yeomen of the Guard, for which she was bestowed Best Female Singer 2004 at the AIMS (Association of Irish Musical Societies) awards; Mabel in The Pirates of Penzanze and Emma Carew in Jekyll and Hyde, both of which earned her the Best Female Singer award at the Waterford Light Opera Festival in 2005 and 2006.

Emma won RTE’s All Ireland Talent Showcase at the National Concert Hall, Dublin in 2007 and was awarded Tipp FM’s Arts Bursary in 2008.

Derek Ryan will sing the roles of Danny Mann, Count Arnheim and Don Jose in The Irish Ring. He studied singing with Dr. Veronica Dunne and Jeanne Reddin at the Leinster School of Music in Dublin and has sung to great acclaim in some of the most famous theatres around the globe, including Carnegie Hall.

Derek has played numerous roles with St. Mary’s, Clonmel since 2005 when he made his debut with St. Mary’s as The Pirate King in The Pirates of Penzance, which earned him a Best Male Singer Nomination from the Waterford Festival.

Since then he has delighted Clonmel and Tipperary audiences in his many appearances in musical theatre productions and also his appearances with the Tipperary Millennium Orchestra. Derek currently hosts a radio programme on Tipp FM every Sunday morning entitled Just Class.

He is currently studying in London with the renowned vocal coach Robert Bicknell and has produced a number of his own CDs. In 2007 he was awarded Best Male Performer at the prestigious Buxton Festival in England and in the same year appeared as a soloist in Opera Ireland’s Dead Man Walking to great acclaim.

The other principal roles will be taken by two outstanding young professional singers - Sarah-Ellen Murphy (contralto) from Limerick and David Martin (tenor) from Dundalk, supported by a chorus drawn from the cream of Tipperary, Thurles and Clonmel Musical Societies together with a full orchestra under Conductor/Musical Director Danny Carroll, ably assisted by Musical Director/Repetiteur Mary Rose McNally.

The narrator will be Clonmel’s Niall Carroll of Lyric FM and the overall production is devised and produced by Michael O’Donoghue.
