Clonmel World Music has been bringing great quality Americana, Roots, Bluegrass and Folk Bands to Raheen House Hotel, Clonmel since 2010. It is run by local music enthusiasts and volunteers. The gigs take place in the intimate function room of the hotel in a comfortable, cafe-style setting.
The next Clonmel World Music gig takes place next Wednesday, 1st August and features the cream of the crop of Traditional Irish Music with The Mairtin O’Connor Band. They are squeezing in a Clonmel gig in between tours of Italy and Canada.
The current line-up of the Máirtín O’Connor Band has been steadily evolving into a cohesive musical entity. The trio first performed live together at a gig in Sligo. Such was the musical and personal rapport that developed between them that Mairtin O’Connor, Cathal Hayden and Seamie O’Dowd have since built a formidable musical relationship, gigging together frequently as well as collaborating in the studio.
Individually recognised figureheads of the tradition, they have built solid reputations as master musicians with astounding skill, diversity and virtuosity. Together they produce a vibrant and musically-charged experience that redefines one’s concept of brilliance, verging on perfection.
Their new release, ‘Going Places’ has received rave reviews. In 2009 Mairtin, Cathal and Seamie released the much anticipated album ‘Crossroads’. Máirtín’s previous albums ‘Road West’ and ‘Rain of Light’ are considered ground-breaking and captivating.
Máirtín O’Connor is one of the most respected and best loved musicians to ever emerge from Ireland. One of the main musical forces behind the now legendary Riverdance phenomenon; through his work with De Dannan, Midnight Well and Skylark, and also as a solo artiste, he has quite simply gone where no Irish accordion player had gone before.
A prolific writer of new material, Máirtín’s tunes can be heard on the recordings of many artists and at sessions throughout the world. He has recorded with many leading Irish and international artistes such as The Chieftains, The Dubliners, Tanita Tikaram, Townes van Zandt, The Waterboys, Mark Knopfler, Elvis Costello and Rod Stewart.
Cathal Hayden needs no introduction to anyone even remotely familiar with traditional Irish music. A multiple All-Ireland Championship winner, he achieved worldwide recognition as one of the founder members of Four Men and a Dog. He also was a founder member of trad super-group Arcady. He is one of Ireland’s top fiddlers and his solo banjo performances are quite simply show-stopping.
Seamie O’Dowd’s musical abilities have become increasingly familiar at international level in recent years. Rooted deeply in the traditional music of Sligo, he has played in many genres of acoustic and electric music. He toured the world for a number of years with Sligo trad legends Dervish. He is also a member of the popular trio, The Unwanted, with Rick Epping and Cathy Jordan.
The doors for this exiting Clonmel World Music gig open at 8pm. There will be no support act and the band will start at 9pm sharp.
