As part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations for the Association of Irish Musical Societies (AIMS), of which St. Mary’s Choral Society is a member, President Michael D. Higgins and his wife Sabina held a garden party at Aras an Uachtarain for AIMS members in recognition of outstanding service to the arts.

AIMS is the parent group for over 130 musical societies all over the island of Ireland and is responsible for selecting and hosting the annual awards of the musical theatre scene, the AIMS Awards, which have been held in Killarney for more than a decade now.

St. Mary’s Clonmel is no stranger to the awards podium, with many individual and collective awards coming the society’s way down through the years, the pinnacle of which was winning the Best Overall Show for Man of La Mancha in 1989.

AIMS is split into six regions, with St. Mary’s Choral Society belonging to the south west region, of which the current chairman is Seamus Power of Carrick-on-Suir Musical Society. Seamus received 50 invitations for the region and duly invited the AIMS representatives on the south west regional council from each society in the region. Also included in the invitation were members and former members of the national council of AIMS.

St. Mary’s Choral Society were represented at the event by its three reps on the regional council - Alison McNamara, Grainne Vaughan and Noel Cairns. Ruth Butler, former member of the national council of AIMS, was also present.

Entertainment at the event was provided by Galway Musical Society and the Patrician Musical Society Galway (of which President Higgins is a patron), Rathmines and Rathgar Musical Society and special guest Rebecca Storm.

St. Mary’s Choral Society sincerely thanks chairman Seamus Power for the invitations to what was a wonderful celebration of musical theatre in Ireland, and President Higgins and his wife Sabina for their warm welcome and for recognising the contribution of AIMS over the past 50 years to the arts in Ireland.
