Clonmel Chamber has said that the most recent data from the CSO showing a monthly decrease in the volume of retail sales of 0.7% in June 2012 when compared with May 2012 and an annual decrease of 5.5% highlight that more needs to be done to support this struggling sector.

Brian Cleary, Clonmel Chamber Chief Executive said - “The retail sector has been one of the worst hit areas since the onset of the economic downturn. While the Government has been announcing a number of supports for business and jobs in general, we need something that will specifically help retailers to turn a corner and thrive once again.

“The retail sector was hammered in the last budget with the increase in VAT and we urge the Government to include measures in Budget 2013 to strengthen the retail sector and increase consumer spend,” he concluded.
