Local Fine Gael T.D. Tom Hayes will be holding a public meeting in early March, alongside MEP Mairead McGuinness and IFA Deputy President Eddie Downey, to discuss the current CAP proposals and the implications that they may have for the farming community. The meeting will be held on March 8, at 8pm, in the Minella Hotel, Clonmel.
“With the latest CAP proposals being published in October of last year, and the political negotiations soon to start, I felt it was important to organise an event like this not only to inform the public of what’s on the table, but to hear what they have to say on the subject as well.
“I’m delighted that Mairead and Eddie have agreed to attend and to answer any queries that the people of South Tipperary might have. Mairead is extremely well informed on the matter and will play a vital role in negotiating the best deal possible for the Irish people over the next 12 months. Eddie has extensive experience at lobbying on behalf of the farming community.
“What’s on the table in Brussels at the moment would see Ireland’s net ceiling for direct payments set at €1.236 billion from 2017, this amounts to a 1.5% reduction from the current rate of €1.255 billion. The Commission is also proposing a new Single Payment Scheme that will see the payment being made up of a number of different elements.
“These are only a fraction of the changes proposed, and I would strongly encourage all farmers in South Tipp to come along in March to hear what has to be said. I hope it can be a constructive meeting for all sides and I look forward to seeing everyone on the night” concluded Tom Hayes.
