The town is nestled between three major ranges, The Galtee Mountains, The Knockmealdowns and The Comeraghs, plus the solitary Slievenamon. The Galtee Mountains are only a 10 minute drive from Cahir and is very popular among hill walkers. The Knockmealdown Mountains lie on the Tipperary-Waterford border and the best known part of the area is “The Vee”, so called because of the V shaped gap in the mountains. The Comeragh Mountains boast some of the finest examples of corrie lakes in Europe, and they even give the range its name - the word Comeragh comes from Coumarach which means ‘full of hollows, glacial in origin’. In the centre of the town stands the majestic Cahir Castle. This is best preserved medieval castles in Ireland and contains one of the very few working monument, it has been open to the public since 1971 and is a lovely place to visit. It has been used many times on screen, most recently in “The Tudors”. A short drive, or a scenic walk a few miles from the town is the unique Swiss Cottage. This cottage was built in the early 1800’s. A fully restored National Monument, it has been open to the public since 1989. It boasts hand painted wallpaper and some fine furniture. Cahir is also a vibrant and lively community with many events going on in the town throughout the year. The town benefits from some lovely shops, and many family owned businesses.
